Why Experiential Learning is SO Important!

Experiential learning is CRUCIAL for students. It’s so important for students to be able to apply lessons and values learned in the classroom in real life situations – it helps the lesson to stick! Throughout the year, we offer our Video Curriculum for Classrooms and Afterschool Program. In addition to these INCREDIBLE  programs, we also give students a chance to practice what they have learned throughout the year in a tangible way that extends beyond the school building at Summit, our leadership training center located in Union, Michigan.

At a Day Trip, students are presented with opportunities to face their fears, put their leadership skills to test, and reinforce Core Values  through various experiential learning opportunities that include: Equestrian Learning Center (in partnership with Michigan State University), Adventure Learning Center (high-low ropes course, rock wall), Target Learning Center (in partnership with USA Archery/US Junior Olympics), Nature Education Center (fishing, boating, swimming), Track Learning Center (go-karts) and Service Learning.

Each leadership rotation is considered a classroom and is tied to the FSL Curriculum so students are learning through experience with very intentional steps! There are values associated with each rotation that can change lives. Throughout all of the Summit Learning Centers, student’s coaches encouraging and pushing them every step of the way.

By the end of the day, students will have overcome fears and challenges during our leadership experiences and will walk away with practical steps on how to face those same fears and challenges in their everyday life. Some of the challenges faced include school and academics, relationships with family and friends, respecting others, self-esteem, etc.

While the Day Trip is a BLAST, it’s more than just a day of fun and activities. It helps students continue to grow as leaders. It gives them the courage to face the world with confidence. It changes lives. Not only are students given opportunities they might not otherwise have, they walk away realizing they are capable of accomplishing far more than they have ever imagined.
